DEEP DIVE
The forever war between Databricks and Snowflake is now on the relational database front
Can you believe these guys are now fighting over a 30 year old relational database platform? Well, if your are a passenger on the AI and MCP hype train, you would have greater insights. PostgreSQL is becoming the de facto database for AI enabled applications that utilize MCP.
I’m not going to dig too deep here in this newsletter on the subject of MCP, but just note that PostgreSQL was the first database that ships with a reference MCP server. What does that mean?
A reference MCP server is an example implementation, written and maintained by the core Model Context Protocol (MCP) team, that shows developers how to wrap a real-world system (file-system, Postgres, Git, etc.) in the MCP JSON-RPC interface so an LLM client can discover tools, run them, and get structured results.
