Percona (Let me tell ya a couple of three things)
I went to another conference…
If you have been around here for a while, you will know I attend several conference a year.
The one just yesterday was a Red Hat Summit.
They had one breakout session that really caught my eye:
I was not ready, and I mean that in a good way, what the presenter, Will Fromme had to say.
Will basically stated some database companies gouge their customers with usurious contracts and have the negotiating skills of the fictional character Phil Leotardo from the Sopranos. I have seen this first hand so this is not conjecture. Let’s just say database audits are not fun.
And he named names. 2 in particular that I have written about many times over the years.
What intrigued my about Percona, is that they provide alternatives. They offer alternatives to MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
As database professionals, we must always be at the forefront on keeping costs in check, and researching modern ways on how to keep costs down.
In fact, I had a meeting with one of my team members this morning and he was mentioning to me some cost saving investigations he was working on.
Circling back to Percona, here is a short overview of some of their products.
Percona doesn't build brand-new databases - they take the community editions and make them enterprise-ready without the license fees or lock-in.
Their core is three Distributions: Percona Distribution for MySQL, for PostgreSQL, and for MongoDB.
Percona Distribution for MySQL is their flagship - described as the most complete MySQL solution - and it ships as two options: Percona Server for MySQL, a drop-in replacement for MySQL Enterprise with its faster XtraDB engine and unlocked enterprise features, and Percona XtraDB Cluster, an active/active high availability clustering solution that integrates Percona Server with Galera for synchronous multi-master replication.
Inside MySQL you can also swap in alternative storage engines like MyRocks for write-heavy workloads.
Percona Distribution for PostgreSQL bundles community Postgres with the critical extensions like Patroni, pgBackRest and monitoring tools tested to work together as a single source, as an alternative to EDB.
Percona Distribution for MongoDB is positioned as a production-ready alternative to MongoDB Enterprise Advanced and Atlas without licensing fees or platform lock-in, giving you Community MongoDB plus encryption, audit logging, LDAP/Kerberos and open-source backup and recovery.
Beyond that they wrap all three into Percona Everest, which offers multi-database support to manage MySQL, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL within a single, unified platform on any cloud or on-prem Kubernetes, with Operators for each database.
And since Redis re-licensed, they now also support Valkey - in their own survey Valkey was the most preferred alternative to Redis - with full enterprise support and a new Valkey-proxy to migrate from standalone Redis to clustered Valkey.
